Job Purpose

The Safety Manager – Traveling provides manager-level safety leadership across multiple construction projects nationwide on a part-time, project-based basis. This role supports regions and project teams requiring additional safety oversight, audits, incident support, or temporary coverage, while ensuring consistent implementation of company safety programs, regulatory compliance, and professional safety standards.

This position is aligned with the core Safety Manager role and operates with the same authority, expectations, and professionalism, but without full-time project embedment. The Traveling Safety Manager serves as a mobile extension of the Safety Department, reinforcing consistency, accountability, and operational excellence across regions.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provide manager-level oversight and execution of company safety programs across assigned projects.
  • Conduct high-level jobsite safety audits, inspections, and field observations to identify systemic gaps and risk trends.
  • Enforce safety standards consistently and ensure corrective actions are implemented, tracked, and closed effectively.
  • Support and lead incident and near-miss investigations, including root cause analysis and development of corrective action plans.
  • Serve as a safety leadership resource to project teams, superintendents, and project managers during active assignments.
  • Reinforce consistent safety expectations, messaging, and professional standards across regions and projects.
  • Exercise Stop Work Authority when conditions present imminent risk to workers or operations.
  • Provide surge support for projects requiring temporary safety leadership or coverage.
  • Represent the Safety Department professionally on all assigned jobsites.

Technical Responsibilities

  • Apply OSHA regulations and construction safety standards across multiple project types and regions.
  • Review and support Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), site-specific safety plans, and high-risk task planning.
  • Analyze safety data, trends, and observations to provide actionable feedback to safety leadership.
  • Document audits, findings, corrective actions, and follow-ups accurately and consistently.
  • Utilize safety management systems, reporting tools, and Microsoft Office applications effectively.

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Coach and influence project teams, supervision, and trade partners to improve safety performance.
  • Support and mentor junior safety staff when assigned, without formal ongoing supervisory responsibility.
  • Drive accountability conversations with trade partners and field leadership when safety expectations are not met.
  • Model strong safety leadership, professionalism, and decision-making in dynamic field environments.
  • Collaborate with regional and senior safety leadership to align field observations with broader department initiatives.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not hold formal direct supervisory responsibility but may provide temporary guidance, mentorship, and leadership support to project safety staff during assignments.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Construction Management, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of progressive construction safety experience required.
  • Demonstrated experience operating at a manager or senior safety leadership level.
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification required.
  • CPR/First Aid certification required or ability to obtain.
  • Multi-project, regional, or traveling safety experience strongly preferred.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Requires national travel to active construction jobsites as assignments dictate.
  • Work hours vary based on project needs, typically totaling 20–30 hours per week.
  • Exposure to active construction environments is expected.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, climb stairs/ladders, navigate uneven terrain, and perform field observations for extended periods.
